HIV in Washington, D.C. compared to African nations
If Washington, D.C. were a nation in Africa, it would rank 23rd out of 54 countries in percentage of people with HIV.
Long an issue for the District. One that seems difficult to fight; this is a city strongly split into haves and have-nots.
something about the language of this makes me uneasy.
You are not alone.
Yes AIDS is obviously an issue in some countries in sub-Saharan Africa - but to just randomly compare DC to rates in every single African country…
Every person in Africa isn’t a walking aids virus dispenser.
Why aren’t San Francisco and Bronx in bigger letters? This graphic should tell us exactly what’s wrong with the current view which believes, as NewWave puts it, “every person in Africa is a walking aids virus dispenser.”
They aren’t. So we need to stop thinking of Africa as crippled and us as impervious, it’s more nuanced than that.
